Following numerous motions, questions and representations, the Regional Health Forum of the HSE have informed Fine Gael Councillor, Tom Farrell, that a draft internal re-configuration plan to accommodate four palliative care support beds and ancillary accommodation in the new 50 bed CNU in Clonbrusk has been forwarded to the South Westmeath hospice committee for their consideration.

The planned closure by the HSE of the South Westmeath Hospice palliative care unit in Athlone has been shelved. The news was confirmed by Minister for Health, Simon Harris, following a meeting led by Minister of State, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran at which Longford/Westmeath Fine Gael Deputy Peter Burke and hospice committee members, Joe Whelan and Clare Lennon, were also in attendance.

The Memorial Walk will begin at 12noon from Claddagh Hall and take its traditional route to Blackrock and back, a distance of 6.5km. A planning application for a new €20 million Galway Hospice at Merlin Park is to be submitted to Galway City Council over the next few days, in response to increased demand for palliative care services across a range of conditions.
